Nana Oye Akuffo is the current Assistant General Secretary of the West Africa Research Innovation Management Association (WARIMA) and a Senior Research Development Officer in charge of the Grant office at the College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana. She was the Coordinator for the Office for Research Support and the Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR). She initiated the setting up of the Office for Research Support, which was
set up to streamline the grants administration process at the Institute. She has worked with the Institute for the past thirteen years in its administration as a Principal Administrative Assistant. She also played a key role in the establishment of research support offices in Institutions across Ghana and West Africa, including the University of Development Studies (UDS), Tamale, University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Methodist University College, Ghana, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, National Public Health Institute of Liberia, University of Liberia and the University of Sierra Leone.
To revamp her skills as a trainer-of-trainees, she understudied with grants administrators at the Offices of Sponsored Research at Yale University and Morehouse School of Medicine. Working with Senior Members in the University of Ghana and other Institutions, she oversees its research development, implementation and closure. She is a trained expert in negotiating with international funders such as NIH, WHO, DANIDA, EU, USAID, etc. She is also skilled in training in grants management, pre- to post- award research administration and coordination of fellowship programs.
Nana Oye has an MBA from the Central University, Ghana as a Human Resource Personnel. She holds a certificate in project management. She has completed twelve certificate courses at the Society for Research Administrators International Conference. These courses include NIH Grant Fundamentals, Research Law, Introduction to Research Administration and Management, Leadership, Practice of Research Administration, Financial Management, Pre-Award, Post Award, and Clinical Trials. She is a member of the technical committee of the Africa Research Management Capacity Strengthening Programme at the Science for Africa Foundation which is responsible for the design and implementation of the Good Research Management Practice Standard (GRMP). She holds a Professional Recognition certificate in Research Management Professional (RMP), awarded by the International Professional Recognition Council (IPRC). This award is a major step in advancing her career professionally as a Research Manager.
